In a Medical Emergency
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately. Do not rely on this application for emergency medical guidance.
Call 911Not Medical Advice
Diabetes Action Layer ("DAL"), operated by GENAK, provides educational content and self-management support tools for people living with diabetes. The information, recommendations, and action steps provided by DAL are for educational and informational purposes only and do not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
The Application is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment from a qualified healthcare provider. Always seek the advice of your physician, endocrinologist, certified diabetes educator, or other qualified health professional with any questions you may have regarding your medical condition or treatment plan.
Never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking it because of something you have read or received from this application.
About Action Steps & Recommendations
The action steps, recommendations, and guidance provided by this application are generated using a combination of:
- Published clinical practice guidelines from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care in Diabetes
- Guidelines from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE)
- Recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- Published peer-reviewed research from medical journals
- Pattern analysis of your individual glucose data
- Rule-based algorithms and artificial intelligence
While we strive to ensure all recommendations align with current clinical evidence and best practices, these recommendations are generalized and may not be appropriate for your specific medical situation. Your healthcare provider knows your complete medical history and can provide advice tailored to your needs.
Specifically:
- Medication guidance: Never change your medication dose, timing, or type based solely on recommendations from this app. Always consult your prescribing physician before making any medication changes.
- Insulin dosing: This application does not provide insulin dosing recommendations. Incorrect insulin dosing can be life-threatening. Follow your healthcare provider's insulin instructions precisely.
- Diet recommendations: Nutritional guidance is based on general ADA guidelines. Individual dietary needs vary based on medications, kidney function, other health conditions, and personal factors. Consult a registered dietitian for a personalized meal plan.
- Exercise recommendations: Physical activity recommendations follow ADA and WHO guidelines. If you have cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, retinopathy, or other complications, consult your doctor before starting or changing an exercise program.
Estimated A1c & Statistics
The Application calculates estimated A1c values using the formula derived from the ADAG (A1c-Derived Average Glucose) study: eA1c = (mean glucose + 46.7) / 28.7. This is an estimate only and may differ from your laboratory A1c result.
Estimated A1c is based on the glucose readings you log in this application and may not capture your full glucose profile, especially if readings are logged inconsistently or selectively. Laboratory A1c testing ordered by your healthcare provider remains the clinical standard for assessing long-term glucose control.
Glucose statistics (averages, time in range, variability) are calculated from self-reported data and may not represent your complete glucose profile.
Urgent & Emergency Alerts
The Application includes an escalation system that may display urgent or emergency alerts based on your glucose readings. These alerts are designed to prompt you to take immediate action, but they are not a substitute for professional medical assessment.
Glucose emergencies include:
- Severe hypoglycemia (glucose below 54 mg/dL): Can cause confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness, and can be life-threatening
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA): A serious complication especially in Type 1 diabetes, requiring emergency medical treatment
- Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS): Very high glucose levels (often >600 mg/dL) requiring emergency medical treatment
If you experience symptoms of a glucose emergency (confusion, extreme thirst, vomiting, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness), call 911 immediately regardless of what this application displays.
Data Accuracy & Responsibility
The accuracy of recommendations and insights depends on the accuracy and completeness of the data you enter. The Application does not verify the accuracy of self-reported glucose readings, meals, medications, or other health data.
You are responsible for:
- Entering accurate glucose readings from a properly calibrated glucose meter or CGM
- Accurately reporting medications, meals, and activities
- Following your healthcare provider's instructions, which take precedence over any guidance from this application
- Seeking medical attention when needed, regardless of app notifications
Limitation of Liability
GENAK and its affiliates shall not be liable for any injury, loss, or damage arising from the use of DAL, including but not limited to:
- Actions taken based on recommendations provided by the application
- Failure of the application to detect or alert about a dangerous glucose level
- Inaccurate estimates, statistics, or predictions
- Technical failures, data loss, or service interruptions
- Decisions to delay seeking medical care based on app content
By using this application, you acknowledge that you understand these limitations and accept full responsibility for your health decisions.
